Two fellowship recipients will be awarded $3,000 each and a solo exhibition at HCP in the summer of 2012. One Houston-based artist (residing within a 100 mile radius of Houston including the Beaumont, Galveston, and College Station areas) will receive the Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship and another artist from anywhere in the world, outside the Houston area, will receive the HCP Fellowship. W.M. Hunt, Collector, Curator and Consultant (New York, NY) will jury the fellowship selection.

W.M. Hunt (Bill Hunt) is a New York-based collector, curator and consultant, a champion of photography. He loves fresh talent and Houston. He is responsible for introducing many major contemporary artists in the US, including Luc Delahaye, Julian Faulhaber, Andreas Gefeller, James Mollison, Erwin Olaf, Martin Schoeller, and Paolo Ventura, etc. “RE: Groups: American Photographs before 1960” selections from his “Blind Pirate Collection” was shown at HCP in 2010.
His “Collection Dancing Bear” of photographs is the subject of “The Unseen Eye; Photographs from the Unconscious”, published by Thames & Hudson in the UK and Aperture in the US and as “L’Oeil Invisible” by Actes Sud in France. Highlights of the collection have been exhibited in Arles, Lausanne and Amsterdam and the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY and Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, OR.
Hunt has been a longtime board member of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, AIPAD (Association of International Photography and Art Dealers), and The Center for Photography at Woodstock. He also teaches at the School of Visual Arts and for many years he has produced the “Your Picture …” panels for PDN. He has also written for a number of publications and monographs (Bill Armstrong, Mark Beard, Manuel Geerinck, Bohnchang Koo, Luis Mallo, Jeff Sheng, Mickey Smith, Phil Toledano, Frank Yamrus, etc.)
Most recently he had curated Photolucida’s Critical Mass touring exhibition and judged competitions for Photo Center North West in Seattle (“Equivalents”), the Castell Gallery in Asheville, NC (“Road”) and KlompChing in Brooklyn, NY (“FRESH”).
He was one of the principles in Hasted Hunt (and more recently Hasted Hunt Kraeutler) and Ricco/Maresca Gallery.

Campos de Gutiérrez is now accepting proposals for the first session of 2013 (January 15th – March 30). The foundation offers up to 60% coverage of program costs.
The Campos de Gutiérrez Foundation is inviting artists, designers, art historians, and curators to apply to its residency program housed in a 19th century coffee plantation in the foothills of Medellin. The residence is located within a natural reserve 25 minutes away from the city’s downtown area.
The full ten-week program provides residents with the following: Private lodging with unlimited studio access; A studio visit from one guest critic in addition to optional weekly critiques; Weekly guided trips to sites of interest in Medellin; Access to the Campos de Gutiérrez Library and Archive; An exhibition or artist talk.
The foundation will select six to eight applicants to participate in this session. The foundation offers up to a 60% need-based subsidy of the program fee, which is estimated at USD $750 a month (4 weeks). Costs are lower for bilingual residents who are fluent in English and Spanish and groups. The fee does not cover board, transportation, or materials except for ceramic clay.
Proposals should be made to begin after January 14th and end before March 31st, 2013. The minimum amount of time for a residency period is six weeks. Photographer Uses His iPhone’s Glass Back as a Collodion Process Wet Plate
iPhone users who want to flaunt their inner photography geek can buy special skins or cases thattransform their phone into a camera look-alike. That option wasn’t awesome enough for photographer Jake Potts of Bruton Stroube Studios, who recently decided to use his phone’s glass back to create an ambrotype photo using the wet plate collodion process!
Potts writes,
To make an ambrotype, a piece of glass is coated with salted collodion, sensitized, placed into a camera and exposed like a piece of film. Then back in the darkroom, the glass plate is developed, fixed and washed. This process was invented in 1851 and has recently been embraced again by many artists and photographers for its unique aesthetic and hand-made quality.After purchasing a replacement iPhone back panel that was sans branding, Potts created a custom “film holder” so that his phone could be attached to his camera. He then scrubbed the glass clean, and poured on a coating of collodion:
After the collodion is on the plate, it has to be sensitized, shot, and developed before the collodion dries, which is probably 10-15 minutes. Once sensitized, it has to stay in the dark to be loaded in the holder. The holder is then taken to the camera fitted with a lens that dates to 1872 (woah, camera nerd alert!) and the exposure is made. Back in the darkroom, the plate is taken out and developed. Development times are fast, around 15 seconds (unlike film which takes minutes).
The next step involves placing the plate (currently with a negative image) in the fixer, which reverses the image and gives it a warm-tone:

Potts says that as far as he knows, this is the first time anyone has used an iPhone for wet plate collodion photography.

Our photo contests have gained such positive momentum we now offer them on a semi-annual basis. So it is with enthusiasm that we announce that our second contest for 2012 is open for entries. The theme isOUTSIDE. Sweeping landscapes, cityscapes, the geography of textures, forms and shapes—how OUTSIDE is defined is largely up to you.

It's time to pull together the best of your images from the past year for entry in the annual College Photographer of the Year competition. There are important changes in the Portfolio and Multimedia categories this year as well as the addition of two new interpretive categories.Pay very careful attention to the category definitions, rules and entry guidelines this year as any entry that violates a prohibition outlined in a specific category definition will have to be disqualified. As always, please do your absolute best to enter correctly.
Entry remains free, courtesy of Nikon Inc. and the deadline for entry this year is 11:59 pm Central Standard Time, Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012. But please help yourself and us, by entering early and preventing a last minute logjam on the CPOY servers.

WELCOME!
Hey all, some of us thought it would be a great idea to have an outside source to communicate with one another. SCAD GRADUATE PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB!! is meant to facilitate discussion about classes, suggestions about personal/school work, getting together for drinks/dinner/print exchange.. etc. Use it however you want!! It is my personal opinion we reframe from any form of critiques (I don't think the internet is a place for MFA/MA students to ask for honest feedback about work to each other) We can do that in person! Of course, I think it would be awesome to see behind the scenes shots, work updates, stories, and what not!
for example.. this is what happens when I go out to shoot....
Do what you will with the blog, it is meant for us to become closer, to become more familiar with each other's ideas, and to have easy access to public information and suggestions.
If anyone knows more about blogger.com than I do, please tell me how we can limit members to only graduate students.
